The Medical Journal of Australia has produced a special Indigenous edition this week (volume 192, number 10, pp 545-624, 17 May 2010). It includes articles on the Northern Territory intervention, oral health, diabetes, mental health, and maternal and child health. Warwick Anderson, CEO of the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) writes about the NHMRC Roadmap for Indigenous health research. Jane Harrison's essay that won the Ross Ingram Memorial Essay Competition is also featured. This reference was from the Lowitja Institute, Australia's National Institute for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Research, incorporating the Cooperative Research Centre for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health. This will provide policy makers and program managers with an evidence base for achieving the Closing the Gap targets and related Indigenous reforms. Indigenous Australians will benefit through the delivery of policies and services which address Indigenous disadvantage more effectively. |
